Set A New Year’s Resolution To Get An Estate Plan

Happy New Year everyone! Ringing in the New Year is an exciting time. It is the time when we look back at previous years on this magnificent blue ball we call Earth, take a moment to introspect and determine what we’d like to change about ourselves. Perhaps we want to become more healthy, read more books, spend more time with family, make more money, or finish watching Baby Yoda and all of his shenanigans. However, there is another resolution that many do not consider and is actually easier than all of the above: get an estate plan.

Step 1: Understand Why You Need One

An estate plan is ‘about’ you, but not ultimately ‘for’ you. You choose to get an estate plan. You choose what the estate plan states. You certainly pay for the estate plan. Nonetheless, an estate provides peace of mind and sound instruction to your friends and family should something happen to you. This means your loved ones will essentially have a detailed instruction sheet concerning your medical care and asset distribution in the event of your passing, or the ability to make decisions on your behalf if you are unable to do so. If you have children, the estate plan also gives you the opportunity to explain, in certain circumstances, who will care for your children.

Step 2: Putting Us To Work

Unlike the other resolutions above, we (your attorneys) will actually do most of the work. We will meet with you and help you determine what estate planning options would be best for your situation. Then, while we are working on your estate plan, you can go after your other resolutions.

Step 3: Basking In Your Resolution Success

The true beauty of setting a New Year’s resolution of getting an estate plan is that it is easy. Could you pay someone to eat healthy for you, or work out for you? Or could you accomplish your health goals by only eating better or working out once this year? Of course not. But estate planning is different. We’ll do the work for you and you likely only need to address your estate plan once this year. Meet with us, and we will provide you a completed estate plan, and you will touch base with us every year (or earlier if you choose) to ensure that your estate planning needs are met.

Estate planning is a great way to achieve a New Year’s resolution and provide peace of mind for yourself and your loved ones. Add “estate plan” to the top of the New Year’s resolution list (we are comfortable if you finish the Mandalorian first, however).
